A Shellshocked Nation
Britain Between the Wars
with Juliet Nicolson
Upstairs at Bookfest
After the calamity of the Great War, Britain longed for escapist fun. It was easier to spend a day at the seaside than to worry about mass unemployment, political scandals or military manoeuvres in Europe. Combining cultural, social and political history, A Shellshocked Nation sketches a portrait of the country through its entertainments and scandals, its people and political crises.
Alwyn Turner is a historian and writer who teaches at the University of Chichester. He will be in conversation with Juliet Nicolson.
Tickets go on sale 15 August for priority booking and 22 August for general sale.
