Poetry of the First World War
Saturday 6th October 2pm – 3pm
£10 Queen’s Hall
The centenary of the Armistice takes place in November 2018. John Onions will give a brief introduction to the literature of the war and its continued significance. The poetry that came out of the First World War exposed, for the first time in history, the real horror of war, but war poetry didn’t simply develop in the way we have thought it did. John Onions will select several poems, which will be read by actors, and give brief contextual or biographical comments about each one.
For over 30 years, John Onions has researched the poetry of the First World War and has published two anthologies. The Winter of the World brings together over 200 poems and was reviewed as ‘…. immaculately crafted … wide and authoritative … recommended unhestitatingly’..
